The history of this island is very old as owing to its location it served as an outpost back in the past. Already in the 6th ct. a fortress was built here the rests of which are still visible on Gradina, the site above the Velika Stupica bay as well as on the Gustijerna hill above the Mala Stupica bay. Many traces of the ancient forts prove the importance that Zirje
had as a strategic point of this region.
The historic documents say the the Croatian king Petar Kresimir IV in 1059 gave this island to the Benedictines. After that the princes of Bribir gave it up together with the island Murter

The church of Velika Gospa built in 1480 is a valuable historic monument. During the reign of the Venetians, some noble families from Sibenik had their property on the island but in 1572 during the Cyprus war, in spite of the resistance of the inhabitants the Turks completely devastated the island. Much later, during the Homeland War, in the nineties, Zirje
became important again because from the top of its hills Sibenik was defended from the air, sea and land attacks.
